Volunteer of the Month, March 2017

Pharmacist, Olympian, Hep Hero and Hepatitis Victoria Volunteer

  • What inspired me to become a Hepatitis Victoria volunteer

I have worked as a pharmacist around Australia for the last ten years, with a passion to work within our diverse community, reduce stigma and empower people to strive for optimal health. My interests in health and wellbeing extends beyond my careers as a pharmacist, taking me around the globe, representing Australia as a distance runner for the past 6 years.

  • One of my favourite Hepatitis Victoria sessions or moments

In 2017 I was inspired to become a Hepatitis Victoria volunteer as a result of further studies in public health and a desire to be involved in improving health education within the community.

A highlight for me with Hepatitis Victoria was the opportunity to be involved with a youth education session, focusing on sharing and increasing awareness and understanding of hepatitis, encouraging engagement and reducing fear and stigma.

  • What tips do I have for new volunteers?

Be engaged, positive and open to learning. Have confidence in drawing on your own experiences and knowledge, and be prepared to learn and be inspired by the people you will meet along the way.
